Anthropic prohibits creating game clones in Claude: what is the reason

Artificial intelligence will block the recreation of famous franchises in the chatbot

AI company Anthropic has updated the source code of its Claude chatbot to block users from creating exact replicas of popular video games. The decision aims to protect intellectual property amid a surge of fan-made ports running inside web browsers. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Ольга Завада) citing Addy Osmani, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Users on the social media platform X first spotted new lines of code integrated within the Claude system. The instructions explicitly forbid artificial intelligence from generating exact copies of specific existing games, even if the project receives a new title or is marketed as an original creation.

Protection of intellectual property

Addy Osmani from the Anthropic technical team officially confirmed these modifications. He explained that the company aims to prevent intellectual property violations, noting that utilizing AI to build precise replicas directly violates terms of use, while original games designed by users remain accessible.

Osmani added that the engineering team will continue refining the system to maintain the proper balance between creative freedom and legal compliance. The tightening of rules comes in response to a recent wave of decompilation trends driven by modern technology.

Browser decompilation wave

The update emerged against the backdrop of a sharp surge in popularity for vibe-coded fan projects. Cases of AAA games being decompiled and adapted to run inside standard web browsers through artificial intelligence have become increasingly frequent across the internet.

Among the most prominent projects of this kind, observers noticed major hits including Halo: Combat Evolved, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Grand Theft Auto V. Tech giants are consequently forced to exercise stricter oversight over content generation tools.

Copyright lawsuits and legal challenges

These new restrictions are closely tied to a history of legal actions directed at the company. Last year, Anthropic agreed to pay a record 1.5 billion dollar settlement within a class-action lawsuit filed by 500,000 authors accusing the firm of utilizing protected materials to train AI models.

Additionally, a similar lawsuit was recently filed against developers by the estate owners of Elvis Presley. Such legal developments compel major technology companies to strictly monitor the usage of their instruments to prevent potential copyright infringements.
