The perpetrator had a pistol and a knife seized from him after detonating an object resembling a grenade
In Ternopil, law enforcement officers apprehended an armed man who was holding hostages inside a shop on Danylo Halytskyi Boulevard. No one was injured during the incident on November 5. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing information from the National Police of Ukraine.
A special police operation commenced after the 102 emergency line received a report about an armed individual threatening people inside a retail establishment. According to investigators, the attacker was under the influence of alcohol.
Details of the security operation
During the negotiations, police officers employed tactical maneuvers to distract the perpetrator. This allowed the hostages to safely exit the premises through a service door, avoiding any threats to their lives.
As the people were fleeing, the suspect detonated an object resembling a grenade and opened chaotic fire. Thanks to the swift actions of the KORD special forces unit, the offender was neutralized and detained without further casualties.
Background of the conflict
Law enforcement officials determined that the 53-year-old local resident had visited the same shop shortly before the attack. A conflict had erupted between him and the staff, after which the man left, only to return later armed with a firearm and a hunting knife.
The arrest was carried out in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Physical evidence indicating preparation for a crime involving dangerous items was seized from the perpetrator.
Legal qualification of the actions
Investigators have currently entered the information into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations. The detainee’s actions are qualified under Part 2 of Article 146, which concerns illegal deprivation of liberty, and Part 1 of Article 345 of the Criminal Code regarding threats or violence against law enforcement officers.
A pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and the final legal assessment of the suspect’s actions will be determined based on its results. The issue of serving the man with a notice of suspicion and selecting a pre-trial restraint measure is being decided.
