Lawmakers plan to block the return of Russian fuel to the global market
The Democratic Party in the US, having secured control of both chambers of Congress starting in January, is considering a new aid package for Ukraine. Backing from both parties gives legislators the necessary two-thirds majority to override presidential vetoes. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Едуард Ткач) citing Reuters, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
US President Donald Trump had previously largely suspended financial and military support for Kyiv. Meanwhile, this move drew sharp criticism from lawmakers across both political parties.
Actions regarding Russian sanctions
Frustration among Republicans and Democrats also mounted after sanctions against Russian diesel fuel and energy sectors were lifted weeks after relevant laws were signed.
Representative Gregory Meeks of New York, who is positioned to chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at blocking the administration’s plan to return Russian diesel to global markets.
Priorities and voting dynamics
Democratic aides stated that assistance to Kyiv remains a top priority. Taking control of the floor agenda in January will allow lawmakers to schedule critical votes independently.
While the exact margin of the majority is not yet finalized, historical bipartisan backing suggests Congress can secure sufficient votes to counter a presidential veto.
