The institute will receive 350 million euros annually starting from 2028
The Ministry of Defence of the Netherlands has established the National Institute for Defence Technology to accelerate the development and deployment of military innovations. The organization's first project is dedicated to protecting critical infrastructure in the North Sea. This was reported by Ukrinform citing NOS, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
State Secretary Gijs Tuinman officially presented the National Institute for Defence Technology (NIDT) at the military base in Stroe. The primary objective of the new entity is to boost domestic production of defence technologies and enable rapid scaling of developments when required.
According to the official, the war in Ukraine has demonstrated rapid shifts on the battlefield driven by the use of drones, artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, and autonomous systems. Consequently, the institute will focus on establishing flexible approaches to collaboration and testing rather than developing specific equipment models.
Funding of the Netherlands defence institute
Beginning in 2028, the institution will receive regular state funding of 350 million euros annually. However, the institute has already launched its operations and announced its first tender without waiting to reach full financial capacity.
Officials are inviting not only specialised defence companies to submit applications, but also civilian startups, universities, and research institutions.
Protection of North Sea infrastructure
The first practical competition by NIDT is aimed at ensuring security in the North Sea maritime area. The need for heightened control stems from the activity of Russian reconnaissance vessels and shadow fleet ships in the region.
The area represents a vital hub for the national economy, encompassing sea routes to the Port of Rotterdam, subsea fibre-optic cables, offshore wind farms, and industrial facilities.
