How to build a career in the Ukrainian Armed Forces today: an explanation from the Ministry of Defense

The ministry explained how combat experience and education influence the speed of promotion.

Full-scale war has significantly changed career opportunities in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, introducing contracts instead of mobilization, accrual of military ranks within a shorter timeframe, and training both in Ukraine and abroad. The Ministry of Defense explains how one can build a military career today and what to pay attention to, reports Dengi.ua. PromPolitInform reports.

Specifically, contract service offers a voluntary format with clear deadlines and additional benefits. The main advantages of a contract are the ability to independently choose a unit, receiving financial assistance for signing the first contract, and the right to service housing or rent compensation.

Ukrainian citizens and foreigners aged 18 and older can join the military under a contract. This option is also available to those already serving due to mobilization. Contract terms vary depending on rank:

Private personnel – 3 years;

Noncommissioned officers and petty officers – 3 to 5 years;

Officers (after university) – 5 years;

Aviation flight personnel – 10 years.

Important: If the contract was signed before February 24, 2022, and it expired during the war, service is automatically extended until the official demobilization is announced.

The typical career path in the Ukrainian Armed Forces begins with a basic position or training. Promotion is based on individual plans that take into account professional competence, assessment results, and personal achievements.

Particular attention is now being paid to accelerating the acquisition of officer ranks. Due to the need for basic commanders, the rank of junior lieutenant can now be awarded to:

service members who have completed a shortened training program;

sergeants and petty officers with higher education or those who are already successfully performing duties in officer positions;

Mobilized soldiers with a bachelor’s degree after completing specialized military training courses.

A military career also provides for constant rotation between command, staff, and academic positions, allowing for professional flexibility even after the end of active combat.

We previously reported that, according to the revised bill, service members under the “18-24 Contract” will be granted the mandatory right to a deferment.

We also previously reported that, at the direction of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ministry of Defense has begun preparing new types of contracts for military personnel and is initiating corresponding amendments to Ukrainian legislation.
