Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sent US President Donald Trump an urgent letter warning about the critical shortage of missile defense in Ukraine. The appeal appeared against the backdrop of the intensification of Russian massive attacks on Ukraine and Moscow’s public threats to strike Kyiv again.
In the letter, Zelensky said that during the massive strike on the night of May 24, Russia used 54 cruise missiles, 30 ballistic, 3 hypersonic Zircon missiles and 2 Kinzhal ballistic missiles. The Russians also launched medium-range Oreshnik ballistic missiles – one hit the Kyiv region, and the other fell on the temporarily occupied territory in the Donetsk region.
The head of state emphasized that Ukraine relies almost exclusively on the United States for protection against ballistic missiles.
“On behalf of the Ukrainian people, I respectfully ask the President and the US Congress to continue to participate in this process. And to help us provide this vital means of protection against Russian terror – Patriot PAC-3 missiles and additional systems – to stop Russian ballistic missiles and other missile attacks by Russia,” the letter says.
Zelensky also drew attention to the difficulties in obtaining American weapons through the US arms procurement program with partner funds.
“The current pace of deliveries under the PURL program no longer corresponds to the reality of the threat we face. I ask for your help in protecting Ukraine’s airspace from Russian missiles,” the president stated.
According to a Ukrainian official, with whom journalists spoke, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, sent this letter to the White House, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and other members of Congress.
Later, presidential advisor Dmytro Lytvyn also confirmed this information to journalists.
We will remind, on the night of May 24, Ukraine suffered one of the most massive attacks. The main target of the attack was Kyiv. The occupiers also hit Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region with an Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile. The defense forces managed to neutralize 55 missiles and 549 UAVs. In Kyiv, two people died and at least 87 were injured as a result of the shelling.
