The Danish Armed Forces have deployed conscripted soldiers to Greenland for the first time to participate in the Arctic Endurance exercises. As part of an 11-month training program, the soldiers are honing their skills in Arctic conditions and carrying out operational tasks. This was reported by Danish Defence, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

A group of conscripts from the Schleswig Foot Regiment arrived at Nuuk Airport in early August 2026. As part of the Arctic Endurance exercises, the troops are practicing camouflage, navigation, and coordination in an open rocky landscape that differs significantly from the forested areas they are accustomed to in Denmark.

Executing tasks in Arctic conditions

The soldiers are divided between units in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq, where they are performing operational duties. According to company commander Captain Laura, the ability to effectively utilize the Arctic terrain and move covertly across land without natural cover is critical for the unit’s success in combat.

The participation of conscripts in operational activities was made possible by the implementation of extended service, provided for by Denmark’s 2024–2033 defense agreement. The goal of this reform is to increase the combat potential of the army and free up professional personnel for other priority tasks.

International cooperation and security

The Arctic Endurance exercises are being conducted under the NATO Arctic Sentry strategy in coordination with the Greenlandic government, Naalakkersuisut. Denmark plans to strengthen the presence of its forces, including aviation and naval units, in the North Atlantic throughout 2026 and into 2027.

The ultimate goal of the training is to strengthen the overall security of the North Atlantic Alliance in the Arctic region. Upon completion of the exercises in Greenland, the conscripts will return to Denmark to continue training and consolidate the experience gained.
