The head of the Czech government warns that delaying diplomatic efforts risks a global conflict
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has urged the United States and European nations to initiate negotiations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. He believes that ignoring a diplomatic solution could lead to a Third World War. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
During his address at the IISS Prague Defence Summit, the Czech head of government emphasised the need to force the leaders of both states into a constructive dialogue. Babiš acknowledged the responsibility of the Russian Federation as an aggressor in the current conflict, yet expressed his view that an active diplomatic stance from the West is the only way forward.
Diplomatic initiatives and security risks
Andrej Babiš noted that US President Donald Trump highlights the purely European nature of the current security challenge. At the same time, the Prime Minister criticised European institutions for what he describes as excessive passivity and an inability to take decisive action regarding the war.
The Czech politician pointed to the duration of the hostilities, which has already significantly exceeded that of World War I. He warned that the modern geopolitical trajectory creates real threats of a global catastrophe if European leadership limits itself to issuing official statements without taking concrete steps.
Formats for future negotiations
It should be recalled that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously allowed for the possibility of tripartite meetings involving representatives from Ukraine, the USA, and the Russian Federation. Switzerland, Turkey, or the United Arab Emirates are being considered as potential venues for such talks.
Among the key topics the Ukrainian side deems appropriate for high-level discussion are humanitarian issues, particularly prisoner exchanges. Other critical issues include the stabilisation of the energy sector and the security of agricultural exports.
