Daily grain railcar handovers to Slovakia reached an average of 82.5 wagons
During the first 15 days of September, 422.4 thousand tons of grain were transported by rail for export, with 82% moving via western land border crossings. Meanwhile, deliveries to Odesa seaports dropped by 77.6%. This was reported by USM — ports and shipping citing the Telegram channel of Spike Brokers, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The main share of rail grain exports shifted to land crossings on the country’s western border, handling 346.2 thousand tons of agricultural goods. Danube ports in Izmail and Reni handled approximately 65 thousand tons, while railway stations serving Odesa seaports received only 11.2 thousand tons.
Total railway transport of grain to seaports, including domestic freight to Izmail, reached roughly 129.3 thousand tons. This volume is 29.5% lower compared to the same period in August. Simultaneously, deliveries to Danube ports fell by 11.5% to 118.1 thousand tons.
Congestion on western borders
As logistics routes shifted, the rail transport burden on western border crossings rose significantly. The average daily transfer of grain railcars across the four key western routes grew by 44.2% month-on-month, reaching 278.2 wagons per day.
Slovakia accepted the largest volume, averaging 82.5 grain railcars daily. Hungary ranked second with 66.2 wagons, followed by Poland at 65.1 and Romania at 64.4 wagons per day. The accumulation of rolling stock heading toward western crossings reached 12,010 railcars, including 2,821 loaded with grain.
Overall export dynamics
Between September 1 and 17, Ukraine exported a total of 819.6 thousand tons of grain crops. Wheat made up the largest share at 581.7 thousand tons, corn shipments stood at 203.2 thousand tons, and barley reached 34.7 thousand tons.
At current paces, total grain exports in September will reach approximately 1.45 million tons, which is 32% lower than in September 2025 and half the volume recorded in September 2024, when 3.07 million tons were shipped. Corn exports slowed most significantly, with daily deliveries halving to 7.5 thousand tons during September 11–17. Meanwhile, Romanian ports plan to expand transshipment capacity for Ukrainian cargoes.
