European Union transfers 3.3 billion euro tranche under Ukraine Support Loan
Ukrainian Minister of Defence Evgeny Khmara and European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius held a phone call to discuss accelerating the funding for Ukraine's defence sector. The parties focused on addressing the critical needs of the Armed Forces, specifically the procurement of air defence systems and unmanned aerial vehicles. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing information from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
During the conversation, the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence expressed his gratitude to the European Union for providing another financial assistance tranche of 3.3 billion euros. These resources were allocated under the large-scale Ukraine Support Loan solidarity programme.
The received funds are planned to be used to finance state procurement of advanced air defence systems and unmanned aerial vehicles. The Minister of Defence emphasised that this funding is critical for protecting Ukrainian airspace and saving civilian lives.
Importance of rapid decisions
The Ukrainian side highly appreciated the efforts of the European Union institutions aimed at processing Ukraine’s defence requests and promptly providing financial resources to strengthen the military.
“Speed in this matter is critical. The faster decisions are made and funds arrive, the faster the necessary equipment reaches the battlefield and strengthens the capabilities of our military,” Evgeny Khmara said.
Budget planning for the next year
A separate topic of discussion between the defence officials was the long-term financial stability of the security sector. The parties discussed in detail the mechanisms for covering the deficit of Ukraine’s state defence budget for the current year 2026.
Evgeny Khmara and Andrius Kubilius also coordinated approaches to securing and funding key military needs for 2027. Joint work on attracting European resources to strengthen the Ukrainian military will continue.
