The US, Denmark and Greenland have signed an agreement to expand military presence and defense cooperation in the region. The document provides for the creation of the Golden Dome missile defense system and broader access for US troops to Greenland's territory. This was reported by The White House, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The agreement was concluded by the governments of the United States of America, the Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland to supplement the defense arrangements of April 27, 1951. The document takes into account changes in the security situation in the Arctic and the North, as well as the strategic interests of allies in the region.
Defense zones and Arctic security
The parties committed to making the most effective use of defense arrangement procedures to ensure the joint defense of the North Atlantic region. The agreement establishes the legal basis for granting the United States military access to the territory of Greenland in order to protect the American continent.
A separate clause provides for the deployment of the Golden Dome defense system on the island’s territory. The document also emphasizes support for an enhanced NATO presence in the Arctic, including planning joint exercises and intelligence sharing.
Environmental protection and the interests of the local population
The participants of the arrangements reaffirmed their commitment to the provisions of the 1991 Memorandum of Understanding on environmental protection and the conservation of Greenland’s ecosystem. Special attention is paid to preserving the rights of the indigenous population to traditional activities, in particular fishing and hunting.
The document is based on the provisions of the Greenland Self-Government Act of June 12, 2009, and previous agreements signed in Qaqortoq in 2004. The parties agreed to ensure mutual benefits for local society from the operation of joint defense facilities.
