On September 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York. The talks took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Topics expected to be discussed include security issues, the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defense, and a possible energy truce between Ukraine and Russia. According to Zelenskyy, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner joined the meeting. It had previously been reported that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other representatives of the American administration might also participate in the talks.
“I hope that we will put an end to this war, and that President Trump will help us put an end to this war. And I believe we need to do this as soon as possible—before winter sets in; preferably before winter. We are working very hard. So, we will discuss many different issues,” Zelenskyy said.
The portion of the meeting open to journalists concluded after the presidents’ statements. The main part of the talks is taking place behind closed doors, so details of the conversation have not yet been released. As previously reported, upon arriving in the US and prior to his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a bipartisan meeting with Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Richard Blumenthal, as well as Congressmen Dave McCormick and John Curtis. The Ukrainian president thanked the US lawmakers for their support of Lindsey Graham’s sanctions bill.
It was also reported that on September 22, Zelenskyy met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in New York. The parties discussed funding for Ukraine for 2026 and 2027, continued support from the European Union, and sanctions pressure on Russia.
