Ukraine is restructuring the protection of data centers, internet infrastructure, and mobile networks with the worst-case scenario in mind. Plans are in place to locate some systems underground and move others to cloud environments or abroad. For certain critical systems, all three redundancy methods may be employed simultaneously. Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi announced this during the “United News” telethon, as reported by DEV.ua and the PromPolitInform portal.
“Some things need to be underground, some in the cloud, some abroad; some require a mix, and others need all three simultaneously,” the head of government said.
According to Koretskyi, there is no universal method for protecting the entire digital infrastructure.
The redundancy model will depend on the specific system; when designing it, the state must plan for the worst-case scenario.
The issue of protecting data centers and mobile networks has already been discussed at a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously announced decisions made by the Staff regarding the protection of Ukrainian data centers. The need for such an approach became particularly pressing following a series of Russian strikes on Ukraine’s digital infrastructure in September.
For instance, on September 26, a Russian attack severely damaged the DC|COSMONOVA data center in Kyiv. The company announced that the facility would no longer operate, with service restoration proceeding through a partial migration to other sites.
The Incom business center was also struck, while Datagroup switched to backup operations.
Backup sites and distributed data storage are now becoming not only a technical solution for businesses but also a key element in the resilience of Ukraine’s critical digital infrastructure.
