Germany to form first Bundeswehr drone regiment by 2027

The new unit within the 10th Armored Division will utilize both aerial and ground-based drones

In 2027, the German armed forces will create a dedicated unmanned systems regiment for reconnaissance and target engagement. The unit will include an electronic warfare company and will be based on experiences gained from combat operations in Ukraine. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The creation of a specialized formation was announced by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius during a visit to the Bergen training ground in Lower Saxony. According to the official, this will be a separate structure within the Army, designed for comprehensive operations with UAVs.

Structure and capabilities of the unit

The new regiment will pool resources for a wide range of tasks: from reconnaissance to the direct destruction of enemy targets and interception of hostile drones. Technical equipment will include both aerial and ground-based platforms, designed for combat missions at various ranges.

Additionally, the unit’s staffing includes an electronic warfare company. Functionally, the regiment will be integrated into the 10th Armored Division, although the implementation of drone technology will continue in other parts of the German Army as well.

Influence of Ukrainian experience

Boris Pistorius emphasized that the German side is carefully studying the course of combat operations in Ukraine. Results from technology application on the battlefield, particularly the speed of innovation cycles and networked system integration, are becoming the basis for technical requirements in weapons procurement.

The Defence Minister highlighted the value of strategic partnership with Ukraine. Cooperation with the Armed Forces of Ukraine allows German experts to not only analyze successful cases of using new systems but also to test them for subsequent integration into the military practice of the Bundeswehr.
