US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor is being considered as a candidate for new positions
The team of US President Donald Trump is discussing the potential promotion of US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor amid expected personnel changes in the administration following the midterm elections. Possible positions for Gor include Secretary of State replacing Marco Rubio or White House Chief of Staff. This was reported by The Washington Sun, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Washington circles are discussing the prospects of shuffling senior executive branch officials following the conclusion of the electoral cycle. Sources familiar with internal discussions note that former White House personnel director Sergio Gor maintains close ties with the head of state and participates in key events.
Personnel discussions in the administration
Among the potential options for the current US ambassador to India is the position of White House Chief of Staff or taking over the Department of State instead of Marco Rubio. Some interlocutors note that the incumbent head of the diplomatic agency may leave the Cabinet to prepare for future election campaigns. At the same time, officials emphasize that neither Rubio nor Chief of Staff Susie Wiles have publicly announced intentions to resign.
Diplomatic activities and ties
In addition to his work in New Delhi, Gor serves as the special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs, accompanying high-level diplomatic visits. In particular, he participated in organizing Marco Rubio’s trip to Uzbekistan as part of efforts to deepen cooperation with resource-rich countries in the region. Analysts note that his activities often extend beyond the usual authority of an ambassador thanks to direct access to the country’s leadership.
Officials’ reaction to rumors
The ambassador himself sharply denied having any interest in other positions, calling the circulated information baseless. “This story is a complete and utter fabrication,” Gor said, noting the high qualifications of the incumbent Secretary of State. Official representatives of the Department of State and the White House also dismissed such reports as fabrications by anonymous sources.
