KIIS: Most Ukrainians reject the idea of exchanging Donetsk region for security guarantees

A KIIS poll showed that 57% of Ukrainians oppose the transfer of Donetsk region to Russia even in exchange for security guarantees, although the share of supporters of such a scenario has increased slightly.

The majority of Ukrainian citizens continue to have a negative attitude towards the idea of transferring Donetsk region to Russia even in exchange for security guarantees from the US and European partners, although the share of those who allow such a scenario has increased slightly in recent times. According to a regular survey, which has been conducting sociological monitoring since January 2026, at the end of April 57% of respondents are categorically against such a concession, 36% express their willingness to consider such an option, and 7% have not decided on their position. This, writes Bigmir.net, reports the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology. The PromPolitInform portal informs.

Compared to the beginning of March, when 62% of respondents opposed this scenario, a slight decrease in the level of opposition was recorded. At the same time, the share of those who allow the possibility of withdrawing Ukrainian troops from the region in exchange for security guarantees increased from 33% to 36%. The overall dynamics indicate the relative stability of public sentiment, which throughout the entire observation period remains predominantly negative regarding the idea of territorial concessions.

Sociologists also note that the nature of the answers significantly depends on the conditions of the question formulation. If it is specified that the security guarantees will not include the deployment of American troops in Ukraine, the cessation of airspace protection, or free supplies of weapons, the level of support for this option decreases even more noticeably, which further emphasizes the caution of society regarding such compromises.

As reported PromPolitInform, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi signed an order on the mandatory rotation of military personnel in front-line positions.
