Romanian military forces eliminated two Russian Gerbera-type drones in the Black Sea. The UAVs were discovered drifting in the country's exclusive economic zone near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project. This is reported by RBC-Ukraine (Олена Бджола), the portal PromPolitInform reports.
Romanian military personnel discovered and detonated two Gerbera-type drones in the Black Sea. The objects were drifting in the country’s exclusive economic zone near the perimeter of the Neptun Deep offshore gas project.
Acting Minister of National Defence of Romania Radu Miruta stated that the disposal took place at a distance of over 166 kilometers (approximately 90 nautical miles) east of the port city of Constanta. The drones and additional debris were first spotted by the crew of a vessel performing work near the offshore platform.
Military operation to destroy the drones
A Coast Guard vessel with sappers and special forces on board sailed to the specified maritime zone to investigate the report. Specialists recorded two drifting devices in the water.
The Ministry of National Defence of Romania held consultations with the Ukrainian side and received confirmation that these unmanned systems did not belong to the Defence Forces of Ukraine. Following this, the command decided to eliminate the objects through a controlled detonation.
Violations of Romanian air and maritime space
Russian Gerbera drones are typically used by the Russian military for aerial reconnaissance or as decoy targets to distract air defence systems. The incident near Neptun Deep is another instance of Russian military assets entering the territory of the neighboring state.
In late July, Romanian authorities issued an emergency alert due to drones near the border county of Tulcea, prompting the scramble of two F-16 fighter jets. The country’s prosecutor’s office also confirmed that a drone shot down earlier was a Russian Shahed-type strike UAV.
