The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Defence and the Servant of the People faction approved the candidacy of Yevhenii Khmara for the post of Minister of Defence on August 19. The corresponding motion was submitted by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on August 18.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Юлія Капітонова) citing the Telegram channel of Iaroslav Zhelezniak, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The committee members unanimously supported the candidate for the head of the defence department. All 15 members present voted in favour of Yevhenii Khmara.
Defence Department Priorities Identified
During the meeting with MPs, Yevhenii Khmara outlined the main directions of his activities in the new position. The candidate plans to focus on developing the domestic defence-industrial complex, implementing new technologies, and maintaining the human capital policy within the army.
The candidate also emphasised his intention to continue active efforts aimed at seizing the strategic initiative on the frontline and shifting hostilities into enemy territory. He also spoke about the need to retain specialists who are already demonstrating effective results within the ministry.
Parliamentary Majority Position
David Arakhamia, head of the Servant of the People faction, described Khmara as an experienced combat officer who has repeatedly shown courage during his service. The faction announced its full support for this appointment during the upcoming vote in the parliamentary hall.
In addition to defence matters, the meeting covered the nomination of Andrii Sybiha as Minister of Foreign Affairs. The lawmakers expressed confidence in the presidential personnel proposals, noting the professionalism of both candidates.
