One of the launched flare rockets flew at a close distance from the aircraft
A Russian frigate fired two flare rockets toward a Danish military helicopter in international waters. Following the incident, the helicopter crew aborted their mission and left the area. This was reported by Glavcom citing Tv2, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The incident occurred in international waters near Gedser in Denmark while the military helicopter was conducting a routine surveillance and photography mission targeting a Russian vessel. According to Danish defence authorities, the Russian warship launched two flare rockets in the direction of the aircraft.
Incident in the Baltic Sea
One of the two projectiles flew at a close distance from the board of the helicopter. Consequently, the crew decided to terminate the assigned task and immediately departed from the area.
The Danish command emphasized that the helicopter did not return fire. The event is being treated as dangerous behaviour by a Russian naval vessel directed at an aircraft belonging to a NATO member state.
NATO Response
Danish officials noted that the Russian frigate was operating in international waters and did not violate Danish territorial boundaries. Nevertheless, the deployment of signal rockets near a military aircraft created a hazardous situation.
This occurrence took place amid heightened vigilance by NATO allies regarding the activities of Russian warships in the Baltic Sea region. Denmark regularly monitors Russian vessels operating nearby.
The Danish command reported no damage to the helicopter and no injuries among crew members. Earlier in the spring of 2026, NATO allies disrupted a covert Russian operation in the Arctic near the Svalbard archipelago, where Russian underwater vehicles tested technologies designed to damage critical submarine cables.
