The perpetrator attempted to detonate explosives at rush hour near an administrative building
The counterintelligence division of the Security Service of Ukraine has detained a Russian agent who was planning a bombing in the center of Rivne. The terrorist act was intended to take place near a state institution, but SBU officers neutralized the threat. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing the Telegram channel of Security Service of Ukraine.
According to the investigation, the detainee planted an improvised explosive device in a trash bin near an administrative building. The perpetrator planned to remotely trigger the bomb during peak hours to cause significant civilian casualties and destabilize the situation in the region.
Operational scheme of the Russian agent
The man, who worked as a courier for a local delivery service, had been recruited via specialized messaging channels. While performing his work duties on a moped, he collected intelligence on the perimeters of state facilities and parking areas, regularly sending photographs to his handlers from the rf.
Later, the suspect received coordinates for a cache containing the remote-controlled explosive device. SBU officers exposed the perpetrator’s intentions and apprehended him at the scene while he was attempting to flee.
Legal consequences for the detainee
During the search, a smartphone was seized, which had been used to coordinate with Russian intelligence services. The suspect has been notified of suspicion of a completed attempt to commit a terrorist act under Part 2 of Article 15 and Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The court has ordered the suspect to be held in custody without the possibility of bail. The maximum penalty for these charges is 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property, and authorities are currently considering additional charges of high treason.
