US plans global stablecoin expansion to protect dollar dominance

Digital asset providers already hold billions of dollars in Treasury securities

The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering incentivizing the use of stablecoins abroad to strengthen the position of the dollar and increase demand for government bonds, Bloomberg reported. This was reported by Minfin citing Bloomberg, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Washington could support such projects through joint ventures and with the participation of private business. The initiative could involve the Department of the Treasury, the Department of State, and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation.

Currently, this is an unformalized idea, so specific companies, countries, and funding volumes have not yet been determined. At the same time, issuers of such assets are required to back them with reserves that include U.S. dollars and short-term Treasury bonds.

Volume of assets in Treasury securities

Stablecoin providers already hold nearly $200 billion in Treasury bills and other short-term government securities. Increased demand for digital tokens automatically generates additional demand for U.S. sovereign debt.

The legal foundation for this was laid in 2025 when Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law. The document established federal requirements for payment stablecoins and obliged issuers to maintain reserves at least equal to the volume of issued tokens.

Statement by the Treasury Secretary

“Expanding the stablecoin market can reinforce the role of the dollar as the global reserve currency,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously stated.

Such steps are being taken against the backdrop of the development of other international payment infrastructures. In particular, countries around the world are developing their own digital platforms within the mBridge project using the Chinese digital yuan.

Digital payment infrastructure

The European Central Bank is also actively promoting the digital euro project and the integration of blockchain systems with traditional financial infrastructure. The spread of dollar stablecoins abroad could become a way for the U.S. to maintain influence in digital international settlements.
