Russian State Media Banned from Reporting on Military Budget Surge

Defense spending is planned to reach 17.1 trillion rubles in 2027

Russian propaganda outlets have been instructed to conceal information about record-breaking military spending increases in the new draft state budget for 2027. Instead, media controlled by the Kremlin are ordered to focus the audience's attention on social payments and compare deficit indicators with European countries. This was reported by The Moscow Times citing Reuters, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Special guidelines advise propagandists to concentrate on the construction of kindergartens, schools, and pension payments. The Russian leadership aims to divert citizens’ attention away from cuts to civilian sectors and the concentration of financial resources within the security bloc.

Restrictions on media and approved commentators

Employees of loyal publications have also been banned from showing any independent initiative when preparing materials about the country’s main financial document. The presidential administration has instructed them to use exclusively government press releases.

They are permitted to seek expert assessments and comments only from representatives of a few designated institutions. These include RANEPA, HSE University, and the Financial University.

Budget parameters for 2027

The government has officially submitted the draft budget law to the State Duma for consideration. National defense expenditures in the next cycle are projected to reach 17.1 trillion rubles, accounting for 35 percent of total budget spending.

Compared to the current budget law, defense sector funding will increase by 27 percent. At the same time, expenditure on social policy will decrease by 7 percent, and national economy spending by 7.4 percent.

Healthcare and education cuts

In addition to the social sphere, the draft outlines a 6.8 percent reduction in healthcare funding. Educational program expenditures are planned to be cut by 6 percent from previous figures.

Analysts note that the total share of spending on the entire security apparatus, including intelligence agencies, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Rosgvardia, will reach 44 percent of the budget.

Propaganda and public debt spending

Against the backdrop of civilian spending cuts, funding for state-controlled mass media will increase by 43.2 percent. Another 4.6 trillion rubles will be allocated to service the country’s public debt.

The requirement for public debt servicing payments will grow by 21.6 percent compared to the parameters of the current budget.
