First Russian diesel tanker since 2022 heads to New York

Tanker Agioi Fanendes carries 40,000 tonnes of fuel to the US

A Russian tanker carrying diesel fuel has set sail for the US and is scheduled to arrive in New York on 7 November. This marks the first such shipment since Washington imposed an embargo on Russian petroleum products in 2022. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Едуард Ткач) citing Reuters, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Loading of the medium tanker Agioi Fanendes took place on 22 October at the Russian port of Primorsk. The vessel, flying the Maltese flag, took on board 40,000 tonnes of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel.

Information regarding the exact identity of the buyer and seller of this petroleum cargo currently remains undisclosed.

Kremlin statements on deliveries

The Russian leadership has confirmed the departure of the first fuel vessel. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that the tanker had departed for its buyers and that subsequent shipments would continue at a steady pace, though he did not specify the final destination country.

The start of exports was enabled after US President Donald Trump announced a diesel agreement. The stated goal of these measures is to curb rising domestic fuel prices ahead of the 3 November elections.

Fuel arrangements and sanction rules

According to the outlined plans, the initial immediate delivery is set at 300 metric tonnes of diesel. Export volumes are expected to reach 500,000 tonnes in November, followed by a planned shipment of 1 million tonnes shortly after.

The US side has also suspended certain provisions within its sanction framework against Russia. Concurrently, European nations face demands to release additional state reserves under the threat of US fuel export restrictions.
