Summit participants in Montreal agreed on further financial and military support for Kyiv
The European Union and Canada have confirmed their readiness to continue supporting Ukraine and to increase sanctions pressure on the Russian state. A joint statement was released following the summit held on October 30 in Montreal. This was reported by Ukrinform citing European Commission, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
In the document published on the European Commission’s resources, leaders emphasized their commitment to the principles of international law and the UN Charter. The parties advocated for achieving a just and lasting peace, underscoring their unwavering respect for the sovereignty and internationally recognized borders of the Ukrainian state.
Partners promised to continue providing Kyiv with comprehensive assistance in various fields, including military, financial, diplomatic, humanitarian, and energy sectors. Euro-Atlantic integration and support for internal institutional reforms remain important aspects of the cooperation.
Support amid aggression
Particular attention at the summit was paid to the issue of accountability for war crimes committed by Russia. Meeting participants assured that they would continue diplomatic and economic pressure on the aggressor until it ceases its illegal actions.
Returning prisoners of war and illegally detained civilians home has been defined as a shared goal. The parties will also work on the repatriation of Ukrainian children who were forcibly deported to Russian territory or displaced within occupied regions.
Financial cooperation mechanisms
Funding was a separate point of the agreements. The European Union welcomed Canada’s decision to participate in the Ukraine Support Loan program, designed to support Ukraine’s budget in 2026–2027.
Within the global strategy, the parties intend to coordinate efforts not only regarding Ukraine but also in other regions of the world. Priority areas will include the Western Balkans, the Republic of Moldova, Africa, and the Indo-Pacific region.
