All negotiation clusters regarding EU accession should be opened as soon as possible
In addition to countering Russian aggression, Ukraine must focus on overcoming corruption and strengthening the rule of law to achieve European Union membership. This was stated by Head of the German Permanent Representation to the European Union Thomas Ossowski during an event in Brussels. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The head of the German representation spoke at an event organized by the German Marshall Fund in Brussels, where negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union were discussed. The diplomat emphasized Berlin’s full solidarity and support in confronting threats from the Russian Federation.
Requirements for candidate countries
«The external enemy for Ukraine is Russian aggression, and Ukraine has our full solidarity and support. At the same time, we expect Ukraine to also fight the internal enemy – corruption, shortcomings in the rule of law, and sometimes in public administration», — said Thomas Ossowski.
According to the official, similar challenges are faced by European Union member states, in particular Germany, which is why these topics are in the focus of attention of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. The enlargement process must strengthen the bloc rather than weaken it, which requires candidates to rigorously implement fundamental transformations.
Order of the negotiation process
The diplomat spoke in favor of the earliest possible opening of all negotiation clusters for the Ukrainian state. In addition, he called artificial the discussions regarding a potential decoupling of the European integration paths of Ukraine and Moldova.
The future pace of European integration will depend exclusively on the ability of candidates to implement European Union legislation after the opening of the clusters. The European Commission previously proposed a schedule for the interim closure of several chapters as early as 2027.
