Zelenskyy orders development of free public ground transport program in Kyiv

The government is developing backup transport schemes in case of metro service disruptions

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to prepare a program for free travel on the capital's ground public transport. The initiative aims to ensure the mobility of Kyiv residents during potential disruptions to the metro system or bridge traffic restrictions. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing the Telegram channel of President of Ukraine.

During a conference call, the head of state received reports from heads of relevant departments regarding current challenges for the capital’s infrastructure. The Prime Minister, the Secretary of the NSDC, and the Minister of Internal Affairs presented options for creating backup transport schemes for Kyiv.

Relevant agencies are currently calculating the required number of vehicles and planning measures to reorganize traffic on key city sections. The main goal of the proposed changes is to ensure uninterrupted and accessible operation of urban ground transport in the event of potential metro system failures or restrictions on Dnieper river crossings.

Special attention at the meeting was paid to the situation in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where recovery works are ongoing following recent Russian strikes. At the peak of power outages, more than 600,000 subscribers, including industrial facilities and critical infrastructure in Dnipro, Pavlohrad, and Kamianske, were left without electricity.

Currently, energy workers are gradually restoring power supply to consumers. The President thanked the repair crews and services working on eliminating the consequences of shelling in frontline regions and affected Ukrainian cities.
