The Ministry of Defense is working with partners to accelerate the supply of missiles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the American MIM-104 Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems, which demonstrate the highest efficiency among foreign and Ukrainian air defense systems.
This was reported by the Ministry of Defense, informs the portal PromPolitInform.
In particular, recently, during a meeting in the Ramstein format, on the instructions of the President, an agreement was reached with a number of European partners on the urgent supply of missiles to Patriot from their warehouses.
The Ministry of Defense tells why these missiles are critical, what types of them exist and what targets they destroy.
Why missiles are critical to Patriot
During the Ramstein meeting, Minister of Defense of Ukraine Mikhail Fedorov emphasized that PAC-3 missiles to Patriot systems are the most effective means against Russian ballistics.
“Today, Russia carried out one of the largest ballistic attacks on Ukraine – more than 24 missiles were launched. The most effective means of countering ballistics is PAC-3 missiles to Patriot systems. We critically need the means to intercept ballistics, because Russia wants to destroy our critical infrastructure this winter,” – said the head of the Ministry of defense.
In addition, Mikhail Fedorov emphasized the importance of increasing contributions to the PURL program, through which Ukraine receives PAC-3 and other critical interceptor missiles.
It is also worth noting that during the full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine on the account of Patriot the destruction of almost all known air targets. Among them are supersonic fighter-bombers Su-34, strategic cruise missiles Kh-101, Kh-555, “Caliber,” aeroballistic missiles Kh-47M2 “Dagger,” the most modern hypersonic missiles “Zircon,” etc.
What are the types of missiles for Patriot
Patriot systems are armed with three types of missiles.
RAS-2 are the very first missiles for Patriot. They have high-explosive fragmentation warheads that explode in front of an air target, forming a cloud of debris. Such missiles are effective against aerodynamic targets – aircraft or cruise missiles, in particular, they are capable of hitting aircraft at an altitude of up to 24 km and at a distance of up to 160 km.
PAC-3 CRI is a high-maneuver interceptor missile. They develop a sufficiently high speed and directly hit the target. Thus, these missiles use the kinetic principle of defeat to destroy. Effective against hypersonic aeroballistic targets, they can intercept them at an altitude of up to 20 km and at a distance of up to 40 km.
PAC-3 MSE – the newest and most effective interceptor missiles with improved engine and high maneuverability. They also affect targets according to the kinetic principle, but they have better dynamics and maneuvering capabilities. PAC-3 MSE missiles are capable of hitting ballistic targets at altitudes up to 24 km and at distances up to 60 km.
Recall that recently representatives of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine held a meeting with a delegation of the American company RTX, which manufactures Patriot air defense systems. The focus was on accelerating the supply of missiles for these systems, as well as the issue of developing internal technical capabilities for servicing advanced Western weapons directly in Ukraine.
