The risk of a nuclear catastrophe in the world has increased to the highest level in recent decades, which has not been seen since the Cold War. The reason for this is wars, growing tensions and the weakening of international security mechanisms. This was stated by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi during the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in New York, OBOZ.UA reports. The PromPolitInform portal reports.
Nuclear tension is growing in the world
According to Grossi, the world is at a “very special moment” when war has returned to Europe and the Middle East, and the global security system is under enormous pressure. Grossi emphasized that an unstable confrontation is currently taking shape in the nuclear sphere – with more participants, risks and much less predictability.
“War has returned to Europe and the Middle East, and the multilateral frameworks that ensure peace and security are under immense pressure. In today’s nuclear arena, we face a fragile confrontation, with more players, greater risks and less clarity,” the IAEA Director stressed.
Containing risks and responsibly developing a peaceful atom
The IAEA Director stressed that preventing the spread of nuclear weapons remains a shared interest of the whole world, and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which has been in force for more than five decades, is a key instrument in this area.
“The basis of this treaty is a system of safeguards that, through a reliable, fair and impartial verification system, ensures that nuclear materials are not diverted for military rather than peaceful purposes,” Grossi said in a statement.
At the same time, Rafael Grossi noted that nuclear technologies can bring significant benefits to humanity – in particular in the fields of energy, medicine, food security and environmental protection. That is why, according to him, it is important not only to contain risks, but also to responsibly develop the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The head of the IAEA stressed that in the current unstable conditions, the international community must do everything to maintain the effectiveness of global control mechanisms and prevent new nuclear threats.
As reported, on the anniversary of the Chernobyl accident, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the international community, warning about new nuclear risks. The head of state emphasized that the world must not allow nuclear terrorism to continue.
