Russia may attack water supply facilities: the government has told what is being done to protect them and what to prepare for

Russia has repeatedly threatened to strike at Ukraine’s water supply systems, but it is impossible to predict this. It is possible that Moscow will continue to purposefully attack the infrastructure necessary for the lives of citizens. Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine Oleksiy Kuleba spoke about the protection of water supply systems in a commentary on Channel 24, the PromPolitInform portal reports.

How does Ukraine plan to protect water supply systems?

According to Kuleba, Ukraine is already preparing protection throughout the country, and not just in individual regions. He added that resilience plans have already been approved.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that the government is already:

protecting critical infrastructure facilities;

installing backup power for water canals and pumping stations;

developing distributed generation and alternative water supply schemes.

“It is important to understand: water is a matter of basic security. If we can live with electricity in a restricted mode, then the situation with water is much more complicated. Therefore, we are preparing the system so that it can withstand impacts and recover quickly,” said Kuleba.

Oleksiy Kuleba noted that citizens should also be prepared for future Russian attacks.

He stressed that it is important to have a basic supply of water, as well as to check all information and not believe the Kremlin propaganda that Moscow constantly spreads.

What else is known about the threat of Russian attacks on water supplies?

Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of possible Russian attacks on water supply systems in Ukraine in the coming months. He instructed the government and the Office of the President to work on the issue of air defense.

Oleg Popenko, an expert in housing and energy issues, told Channel 24 that Russia could attack Ukraine’s water supply systems, which would lead to serious problems.

According to him, it is practically impossible to create backup ways for water utilities to operate, and this will require more than one year of work.
