Ukraine offered Europe to help conclude an “airport truce” with the Russian Federation – Sibiga

Ukraine initiates the creation of a special platform with the participation of European allies to reach an agreement on mutual abstinence from strikes on airports. Kyiv suggests that the Russian Federation may agree to such a step due to the growing vulnerability of its own airports to Ukrainian long-range attacks.

This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiga in a comment to Politico, informs the portal PromPolitInform.

According to the diplomat, European countries could take on a new role in peace efforts, acting as intermediaries in this matter.

The essence of the proposal and the role of Europe

The idea of an “airport truce” implies that the parties to the conflict will undertake not to attack the aviation infrastructure. Andrei Sibiga believes that Vladimir Putin may be interested in such a deal, as Russian airports are becoming more vulnerable to attacks from Ukraine.

“We probably need a new role for Europe in our peace efforts. Perhaps we will try to achieve a so-called truce in relation to airports. Perhaps our European allies, having created a platform or perhaps a special group, could discuss this,” the Foreign Minister said.

The minister also added that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had already held preliminary discussions on this idea with individual leaders of European states. At the same time, Sibiga stressed that this initiative is not an attempt to replace the United States in the negotiation process, but should become a “complementary direction.”

Readiness of Ukrainian air infrastructure

The issue of airport security is critical for the resumption of civil flights in Ukraine. In February 2026, the leadership of Boryspil International Airport announced its full readiness to resume flights.

According to the press service of the airport, the company managed to preserve:

certification and infrastructure;
professional team;
operational capabilities.

The airport notes that they are ready to start work as a key aviation hub of the country immediately after the official decision on the opening of airspace. Such a decision is possible only if proper security conditions are created and agreed with international partners.
