The resignation of Oleksandr Syrskyi has become one of the most high-profile personnel events of the year. But does it mean the end of his military career? Most likely — no.

In politics and the military, resignation does not always mean the end of a career. Especially during wartime, when experienced commanders are not written off but are instead sought to be used where they can bring the most benefit.
Firstly. Syrskyi is unlikely to be left without a job. The general has one of the most extensive combat experiences among the Ukrainian general staff. The defense of Kyiv, the Kharkiv counteroffensive, command of the Armed Forces during the most difficult periods of the war — this is experience that the state is unlikely to simply shelve.
Secondly. A new position is possible. There are several most likely scenarios:

serving as a military advisor to the President or the NSDC;

representing Ukraine in international military structures;

leading one of the areas of strategic planning or troop training;

carrying out special assignments from the Commander-in-Chief.
Thirdly. He may take a pause.
After several years of continuous command of the largest war in Europe in recent decades, even the strongest commanders need time to recover. This does not mean the end of his service — it could be a period of preparation for a new phase.
Fourthly. His influence will not completely disappear.
Any Commander-in-Chief builds a team of officers who continue to serve. If a significant part of this team remains in key positions, Syrskyi’s professional influence on certain processes may persist for some time even after his dismissal.
The resignation of the Commander-in-Chief is not a finale, but a change of role. For the state, the main thing now is not to lose accumulated combat experience, but to use it as effectively as possible.
The real intrigue is not whether Syrskyi will remain in the system, but what specific mission he will be entrusted with next. This will show whether the personnel decision was merely a change in command, or the beginning of a broader reform of military management.
