A brand new drone tracking system has started operating on the Narva River along the Estonian-Russian border. The equipment currently covers one-third of the border river, with full coverage scheduled for next year. This was reported by ERR, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The first five special masts with radar equipment have already been erected in the border zone along the Narva River. This enables Estonian border guards for the first time to track the movement of unmanned aerial vehicles directly along the border.
The radar screens display not only civilian drones but also Russian military aircraft approaching the control zone. This technological milestone significantly expands aerial surveillance capabilities, said Minister of the Interior Igor Taro.
The monitoring system will fully cover the border river next year
Previous generations of equipment provided only partial visibility, but the new hardware eliminates blind spots. The next phase of development will involve the introduction of specialized counter-measures to intercept hostile drones.
The agency is currently procuring a test position featuring various counter-drone solutions. If successful, such systems could be deployed elsewhere across Estonia, added Minister of the Interior Igor Taro.

Modern radar systems are equipped with advanced technologies for monitoring the airspace. This was stated by Veiko Kommusaar, Deputy Director General of the Police and Border Guard Board.
At present, radar surveillance covers the area from the city of Narva to Narva-Jõesuu. Construction of radars covering the Narva River up to Lake Peipus is ongoing and will become operational next year.
