Pension recalculation for working retirees: conditions and procedures

Recalculation is performed by law after accumulating service or a two-year period

Working retirees are entitled to an increase in their pension payments after accumulating the required insurance record. The recalculation process is not limited to any specific date or month. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Олена Чупровська) citing Liubomyr Kozhukhov, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Under the Law of Ukraine on Mandatory State Pension Insurance, the right to higher payments arises for working retirees if two main conditions are met. The first is having at least 24 months of insurance record acquired after the pension was granted or last recalculated. The second is the passage of a two-year period since the previous pension calculation.

Optimizing pension accruals

As noted by Liubomyr Kozhukhov, a lawyer at Prykhodko & Partners, the Pension Fund of Ukraine is obligated to apply the most beneficial calculation method for the individual. There are two primary mechanisms: a recalculation based solely on the additional insurance record or one that incorporates both the record and the salary earned during the relevant period.

Retirees are advised to proactively monitor their eligibility for a pension review, as this right is not restricted to specific calendar dates. Should any errors in calculations be identified or if accumulated service is disregarded, citizens have the right to appeal the decisions of the Pension Fund through the established legal framework.

Changing pension benefit types

In addition to service-based recalculations, retirees may change the type of their pension provision if they qualify for multiple options. This can be achieved by submitting an application at Pension Fund service centers or via the official web portal for electronic services.

It is also important to note that international charitable assistance is not considered part of a retiree’s total income, which preserves eligibility for various social benefits. The official status of both the donor and the recipient regarding international funds remains a key condition for excluding such aid from income assessment.
