The plant has been without external power since August 20, relying on diesel generators
A temporary local ceasefire has been established at the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to restore external power supply. Repair work on the damaged grid will commence after the area is cleared of mines. This was reported by Ukrinform citing IAEA, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The ceasefire agreement was reached with the mediation of the International Atomic Energy Agency. As noted by the Director General of the organization, Rafael Grossi, this is the seventh instance where the parties have agreed to such measures to ensure nuclear safety at the site.
Power supply issues at the plant emerged on August 20 due to military activities on the northern bank of the Dnipro River. At that time, the only remaining operational 330 kV power line, known as Feropladna-1, was damaged. Since then, safe cooling of the six reactors and spent fuel pools has been maintained solely through emergency diesel generators.
The situation at the facility remains critical due to depleting fuel reserves. The IAEA warns that without urgent restoration of external power or the delivery of additional fuel supplies, the plant risks a complete blackout within the coming days.
Ukrainian technical specialists have been mobilized to carry out the repair work. Before the commencement of the work, demining of the territory will be conducted. The IAEA expert team present at the site will monitor the progress of repairs during the ceasefire period.
