SBU detains FSB agent plotting assassination of activist in Kyiv region

A 19-year-old operative planned an ambush in a forest area using a weapon with a silencer

The counterintelligence division of the Security Service of Ukraine prevented an assassination attempt ordered by Russian secret services against a prominent public figure. Operatives exposed and apprehended the perpetrator as he prepared for the attack. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing the Telegram channel of Security Service of Ukraine.

The special operation was conducted under the personal coordination of the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Oleksandr Poklad. Investigations revealed that the FSB was the order-giver, targeting a public activist residing in the Kyiv region.

According to the investigation, the suspect had been monitoring the daily routes of the potential victim for a long time. He planned to commit the attack during the morning dog walk in the forest, where he had established a temporary observation and ambush point.

Details of the attack preparation

The perpetrator had previously received coordinates for a cache from Russian intelligence, which contained a pistol with a silencer and ammunition. Following the received instructions, the agent was meant to wait for the activist to approach the ambush site before eliminating him with several gunshots.

SBU counterintelligence officers exposed the hostile plans during the preparation stage. The arrest took place directly in the forest while the perpetrator was waiting for the target to appear. During the search, three firearms, ammunition, and smartphones containing evidence of communications with his handlers were seized.

Suspect’s identity and charges

It was discovered that the task was carried out by a 19-year-old resident of Mykolaiv, whom Russian secret services had recruited via his social media activity and posts supporting ideologies aligned with the enemy regime. After recruitment, the individual was sent to the Ukrainian capital to carry out the high-profile killing.

Security Service investigators have notified the agent of suspicion regarding several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: high treason under martial law, preparation for contract killing, and illegal possession of weapons. The suspect is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with property confiscation.
