Military aid to Ukraine is a direct investment in the security of the entire European Union
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has stated that supporting Ukraine's defense is an investment in European security. The diplomat emphasized the need to expand sanctions and provide weaponry to deter the aggressor. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Сергій Козачук) citing Margus Tsahkna, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
During a three-day visit to Ukraine, the head of the Estonian foreign policy department witnessed firsthand the conditions under which Ukrainians are forced to live due to constant shelling and continuous air raid sirens. According to the official, the contrast between life outside the conflict zone and the reality in Ukraine is deeply unsettling. He stressed that the threat emanating from russia’s actions is not confined to the borders of one country.
Security challenges for the European space
The official noted that the russian threat is becoming tangible for EU and NATO countries through provocations. As an argument, he cited a recent enemy strike near the Yahodyn crossing, which occurred close to the border shortly after an Estonian delegation had crossed it. Furthermore, acts of sabotage, cyberattacks, active disinformation campaigns, and attempts by bad actors to place explosives in logistics chains are being recorded across Europe.
Methods of countering russian aggression
To strengthen Ukraine’s position and effectively deter the aggressor, the West, according to Margus Tsahkna, must take a number of urgent measures. The primary task is to provide substantial military support and urgently reinforce Ukrainian air defense capabilities. It is also necessary to expand the capability to strike enemy targets at long range, putting pressure on the occupation forces.
The minister highlighted the strengthening of the sanctions regime as a key point to minimize revenues funding the russian military machine. The ultimate goal of these actions should be to make Vladimir Putin realize that every new war crime only increases the cost of the conflict for the russian federation. Meanwhile, the EU notes that moscow’s strategic goal remains the political collapse of Ukraine and its full occupation, rather than just the seizure of certain eastern territories.
