The European Commission promised to provide technical support to Spanish investigators
Spanish authorities have turned to the European Union Agency for Railways for technical support to investigate the train crash near Urda in the province of Toledo. According to European Commissioner for Transport Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the agency will provide necessary assistance, though the investigation remains fully under the authority of Spanish experts. This was reported by El País, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The accident occurred on October 28 and resulted in 69 fatalities on the railway network. The investigation is led by the Independent Administrative Authority for Technical Investigation of Railway, Maritime and Civil Aviation Accidents and Incidents. Previously, similar assistance from European specialists was requested during the inquiry into the previous railway accident in Adamuz.
European transport security priority
The official emphasized the importance of transport safety and expressed condolences over the deaths in Urda. At the same time, the European Commission representative urged waiting for the conclusion of the independent investigation before drawing any final conclusions. Two major railway accidents within a single year raise concerns regarding passenger trust in this mode of transport.
Railway development strategy
The European Union has actively promoted rail transport to advance its economic electrification goals and reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Incidents on high-speed lines undermine this strategic objective. To mitigate risks, the relevant European agency insists on the rapid deployment of the ERTMS rail safety system across all lines.
