Mandatory technical inspection for all cars in Ukraine: when will it be introduced and what will change

Ukraine plans to return mandatory technical inspection for all passenger cars by the end of 2027.

Ukraine is obliged to introduce mandatory technical inspection for all passenger cars by the end of 2027 – this is a requirement of the European Union within the framework of European integration obligations. Dengi.ua reports this with reference to the statement of the Deputy Minister of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine Serhiy Derkach. The PromPolitInform portal informs.

Currently, only commercial trucks and buses undergo mandatory technical inspection in Ukraine. Owners of ordinary passenger cars are exempt from this procedure, but soon the situation will change dramatically.

When will mandatory technical inspection for passenger cars be introduced in Ukraine

According to Serhiy Derkach, the Cabinet of Ministers is already working on a relevant bill. The norm, which obliges all vehicles without exception to undergo periodic technical inspection, should be approved by the end of 2027.

The government fully supports this initiative, as it solves two global tasks: significantly increases the level of road safety and synchronizes Ukrainian transport standards with European ones.

Why the return of technical inspection is controversial

Despite the readiness of the Cabinet of Ministers, the initiative is encountering resistance within the walls of parliament. A number of people’s deputies oppose the innovation, citing the fact that it will become an additional financial burden for citizens in wartime.

Derkach admits that the issue is politically sensitive and controversial, but emphasizes: we can no longer turn a blind eye to road safety.

Unannounced road checks: what else is being prepared for drivers

In addition to the classic technical inspection at stations, Ukraine should introduce a system of checking the technical condition of cars right on the roads – this is standard practice for European Union countries.

To implement this stage of the reform, the state will need special mobile diagnostic complexes and an updated regulatory framework, which are not yet available. However, the deputy minister assured that road checks are one of the mandatory European integration criteria, and their appearance is only a matter of time.

Earlier, we wrote that Ukraine is preparing changes to the algorithm for paying administrative fines for traffic violations, recorded in automatic mode.

It was also reported that updated requirements for mandatory technical inspection of vehicles will soon come into effect in Ukraine. The technical inspection procedure will necessarily be accompanied by full photo and video recording.
