The European Defence Union could integrate the defence capabilities of EU member states as well as Ukraine, Britain and Norway.
This was stated by the European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius, informs the portal PromPolitInform.
“NATO membership is currently not available for Ukraine. Full membership in the EU is a complex process that cannot guarantee the rapid integration of defense capabilities,” Kubilius said.
According to him, the most effective tool for Ukraine in the coming years may be the search for a new tool that would focus on the integration of European defense capabilities.
“We need a European Defense Union that will integrate the defense capabilities of Ukraine, Britain and Norway with the defense capabilities of the EU member states,” the European Commissioner for Defense emphasized.
He noted that such integration could provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees after the establishment of a just peace, as well as serve as an important basis for its effective restoration.
Kubilius also stressed that Ukraine’s parallel accession to the common market and the European Defense Union in the near future would be “a clear element of the European strategic policy towards Ukraine.”
Cooperation between Ukraine and NATO
It should be noted that despite a number of recent obstacles, Ukraine’s interaction with the Alliance and the EU defense structures has significantly increased.
Yes, Ukraine will take part in the NATO summit to be held in Turkey. Now the parties agree on the format of the presence and the composition of the Ukrainian delegation.
Also earlier, NATO representatives officially expressed admiration for Ukrainian combat robots, noting their ability to instantly adapt to the changing conditions of the front.
Against the background of these changes, the European Union began to develop its own collective defense plan aimed at eliminating NATO’s bureaucratic obstacles and strengthening Europe’s autonomy.
To test these mechanisms, Brussels has already planned large-scale exercises that will test the EU’s ability to act in case of aggression without direct involvement of US resources.
