The Government of Canada is imposing additional tariffs on a number of US goods effective September 8, 2026. These measures serve as a reciprocal response to similar US restrictions that have impacted Canadian exports.

In response to Washington’s decision to impose 50 percent tariffs on Canadian products worth a total of 27.6 billion dollars, Ottawa is implementing its own defensive mechanisms. The restrictions come into effect on September 8, 2026, at 00:01.
Reciprocal policy in response to trade barriers
The Canadian side will apply rates of 15, 25, and 50 percent depending on the product category, synchronizing them with US tariffs under sections 338 and 232. The total volume of imports from the United States subject to these measures also amounts to 27.6 billion dollars.
The restrictions target product groups most affected by US policy. The list of industries includes metallurgical products, the dairy industry, electronics, home appliances, the paper industry, and agricultural equipment.
Terms of application for new rules
The measures apply exclusively to goods of US origin defined in accordance with current CUSMA customs rules. However, these restrictions do not extend to products already in transit to Canada at the time the decision officially came into force.
