The new system is designed to counter enemy satellites
The United States has placed a new space weapon with offensive capabilities into orbit to protect its military personnel. US Under Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink emphasized that this step is crucial for deterring Russia and China. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Юлія Маловічко) citing The Washington Post, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Washington has repeatedly stated previously about offensive maneuvers by Beijing and Moscow in space. In particular, officials pointed to the use of laser equipment and communication jamming systems capable of posing a danger to American spacecraft.
Disclosing information about the new American capability is critically important due to the need to deter potential adversaries. “This is important from a deterrence standpoint,” Troy Meink said, emphasizing the defensive purpose of the complex against hostile actions.
Protection against adversary satellites
An American government official speaking on condition of anonymity provided details on the future deployment of the newest system. According to him, a likely scenario involves neutralizing an enemy satellite if the latter is used to direct attacks against US forces or assets.
In addition, the American side is currently working on creating a network of space-based missiles. Going forward, these elements are planned to be integrated into a unified missile defense system.
