Holding the vote requires a prior ceasefire agreement
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the possibility of holding elections in Ukraine during the winter period, provided that the United States achieves a ceasefire agreement with Russia. This became known from the head of state's interview with a German TV channel. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Едуард Ткач) citing ZDF, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The head of state explained to media representatives that official Kyiv had voiced its own initiatives regarding the organization of the vote to the American side. According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Washington could push Moscow to halt hostilities for the cold season, which would guarantee citizens a stable supply of water and electricity.
The president emphasized that under such security conditions, the Ukrainian state would be able to organize the electoral process. At the same time, he pointed out complex challenges due to a significant number of citizens who remain abroad or defend the country on the frontline.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Ukrainian servicemen in the trenches have a priority right to choose the president, as it is they who fight for and maintain state independence. The politician called holding elections without the participation of the army an unfair step.
Separately, the Ukrainian leader remarked that the country’s leadership is ready to explore the possibility of voting in an online format. However, to implement such a scenario, the parliament must develop and adopt an appropriate legislative framework.
Earlier, the leadership of the Verkhovna Rada noted the preparation of legal norms for voting under martial law, although implementing this in practice is currently impossible.
