Hits on residential buildings and markets recorded in Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Khmelnytskyi
On the night of September 10, Russian forces launched another massive strike on the territory of Ukraine, using ballistic, cruise, and anti-ship missiles, as well as attack drones. Air defense forces shot down 175 aerial targets, according to the Odesa Regional State Administration. Despite the work of the defenders, damage to housing stock, commercial areas, and critical infrastructure facilities was recorded in a number of regions.
In Kyiv, people were killed as a result of an enemy projectile hitting a residential nine-story building, and operations to clear the rubble are underway. According to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, one person was killed in the capital, and seven others sustained injuries of varying severity, including two children. According to the Odesa Regional State Administration, rescuers from the State Emergency Service led thirteen residents of the capital out of danger zones and saved them.
Strikes in Sumy, Mykolaiv, and on the railway
Massive drone strikes also hit the southern and northern regions of the country. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that in Sumy, a drone fell near a shopping and entertainment center, killing two people and injuring fourteen. In Mykolaiv, attacks continued from the evening and through the morning: the deaths of two people and injuries to seven residents have been confirmed.
In Kyiv Oblast, critical infrastructure facilities were hit, while in Odesa Oblast, a civilian market was targeted. The morning shelling also hit railway infrastructure: a direct hit on a locomotive of the Kyiv–Sumy train was recorded right at the station, though passengers and train staff were not injured. Explosions were also heard in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and Zaporizhzhia.
Nighttime strikes in Kharkiv and Khmelnytskyi
A series of drone strikes hit Kharkiv on the evening of September 9, as reported by Mayor Ihor Terekhov. In Slobidskyi District, a drone fell near multi-story buildings, and the blast wave from a strike on the grounds of an educational institution blew out windows in surrounding houses, where two people were injured. In Kyivskyi District, a drone hit a civilian car, and in Kholodnohirskyi District, a direct hit on an apartment building was recorded.
In Khmelnytskyi, a local market caught fire following an air attack, as stated by Mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn. City services and State Emergency Service units worked to localize the fire in the market stalls. This incident was a continuation of strikes on the region, where on September 2, 3, and 5, enterprise warehouses, freight transport, and a residential apartment building had suffered destruction.
Negotiations regarding FREYJA systems
The Ukrainian side emphasizes the need to strengthen air defense against ballistic threats. Consultations are currently underway with international partners from the US and European countries regarding the supply of modern interceptors and the potential deployment of the FREYJA anti-ballistic system. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that he discussed joint security steps with American and European officials to deter attacks on civilian objects.
Earlier, large-scale missile strikes had already led to severe destruction in the capital’s residential sector. In particular, following the attack by 28 ballistic missiles on July 2 in Darnytskyi District of Kyiv, sections of a nine-story building from the first to the ninth floor were destroyed, and the death toll at that time reached 18 people.
