The fighter jet is armed with two 30mm DEFA 554 automatic cannons
A French-supplied Mirage 2000-5F fighter jet has for the first time destroyed a Russian S8000 Banderol cruise missile using its onboard aircraft gun. These aircraft were transferred to Ukraine by France from its own Air and Space Force stockpiles in 2025. This was reported by Militarnyi citing French Aid to Europe, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The primary cannon armament of the French fighter consists of two 30mm DEFA 554 automatic aircraft cannons built directly into the fuselage. Each gun is supplied with 125 rounds of ammunition, while the rate of fire reaches up to 1,800 rounds per minute.
High-explosive fragmentation and armor-piercing incendiary 30x113mm rounds are used for firing, with an initial muzzle velocity of approximately 815 meters per second.
Characteristics of the S8000 Banderol missile
The S8000 Banderol small-size cruise missile was developed by the Russian company Kronstadt. Its maximum speed ranges from 620 to 650 kilometers per hour, while the cruising speed is maintained at 520 to 560 kilometers per hour.
The missile is propelled by a Chinese Swiwin turbojet engine weighing 8.5 kilograms. At a maximum rotation speed of 65,000 revolutions per minute, it delivers a thrust of up to 81.6 kilograms-force, providing a stated flight range of up to 500 kilometers.
Warhead features
The Russian missile is equipped with an OFBCh-150 high-explosive fragmentation warhead with a total mass of 114.3 kilograms, of which 49.5 kilograms is explosive material.
