In Ukraine, counted 170 thousand people with PEP status and their relatives

In Ukraine, about 170,000 people have the status of politically exposed persons (PEP) and associated people. Such data were provided by YouControl analysts at the request  of “Economic Truth,” having analyzed more than 200 open sources, including registers of declarations and data of the Verkhovna Rada, informs the portal PromPolitInform.

According to analysts, 30 thousand are directly politically significant persons, 140 thousand are persons associated with them (family members, business partners, etc.). Another 7.5 thousand people are “double” subjects (PEPs, which are associated with other politicians, for example, spouses of deputies).

PEP status is obtained, in accordance with the legislation on combating money laundering, topsosadovtsy: ministers, deputies, ambassadors, high command of the Armed Forces and leaders of political parties. The main goal is to prevent corruption, so banks are obliged to apply enhanced financial monitoring to them.

  • Since 2023, PEP status in Ukraine is lifelong. This means that even after the end of his career, the politician and his family remain under the close supervision of financial institutions until the end of his life.
  • In early April, the Verkhovna Rada attempted to soften these rules: the bill on the taxation of parcels was amended to limit the status of only 3 years after dismissal (deputies also discussed a period of 5 years). However, on April 7, the Tax Committee removed this amendment, leaving in force the norm on lifelong monitoring, which is one of the requirements of international partners for the transparency of Ukrainian finances.
